International Day of Education 2026: The power of youth in co-creating education

Every year on 24 January, the world marks the International Day of Education to reminder us why education matters. The theme for 2026 is “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education.” In simple terms, it means this: Young people should not only be taught — they should help shape education. At SkillHer , this is something we strongly believe in. Too often, education is designed for young people without asking them what they actually need. But young people understand their own challenges, goals, and realities better than anyone else. When their voices are included, education becomes more useful, more practical, and more empowering. This is exactly what we saw through the SkillHer SAW project , recently highlighted by the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) . Young women were not just trained — they helped shape learning spaces that reflected their real needs. They learned digital skills, shared ideas, supported one another, and gained confidence to participate more fully in...

Why Effective Goal Setting Matters

Image
Goals are everywhere at the start of a new year, new quarter, or new phase of life. But having goals is not the same as moving forward. The difference is effectiveness. Effective goal setting gives direction. It helps you move from vague intentions like “I want to grow” or “I want more opportunities” to clear actions that shape your daily decisions. When your goals are well defined, you are less likely to drift, overcommit, or burn energy on things that don’t truly serve you. It also builds confidence. Each small, intentional milestone achieved reinforces the belief that progress is possible. For women navigating career growth, skill transitions, or leadership paths, this clarity is especially powerful. It shifts the focus from comparison to personal alignment and momentum. Without effective goals, effort can feel scattered. You may be busy, learning, and working hard, yet still feel stuck. Clear goals help you prioritize, measure progress, and make informed adjustments when life ch...

When One Woman Breaks the Ceiling, Many Others See the Sky

Image
Nigeria recently marked a historic moment with the appointment of the first female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School . For over six decades, this institution has shaped the country’s legal profession — and for the first time, it will be led by a woman. This is more than a headline. It is a powerful signal. For young women dreaming of careers in law, leadership, public service, or academia, this moment quietly but firmly says: there is room for you at the very top. At SkillHer, we understand the power of moments like this. Representation changes imagination. When women see other women leading major institutions, it shifts what feels possible. It replaces doubt with vision, and hesitation with courage. This appointment reminds us that progress is built on preparation. Years of learning, consistency, and commitment eventually meet opportunity. It reinforces one of the truths we hold close at SkillHer: skills matter, persistence matters, and believing in your own growth matte...

Stepping Boldly Into a New Year With SkillHer

Image
A new year always arrives with a quiet mix of reflection and possibility. It invites us to pause, look back at how far we have come, and imagine how much further we can go with intention, courage, and community. At SkillHer, the turn of the year is more than a calendar change. It is a reminder of why we exist: to create pathways for women and girls to learn, grow, and advance with confidence in an ever‑changing world. Looking Back With Gratitude The past year was one of growth, learning, and collective effort. We watched women in our community show up consistently for themselves, stretch beyond their comfort zones, acquire new skills, and support one another through different seasons of life and career. From our learning programs and conversations, to wellness sessions and community hangouts, one thing remained constant: the power of shared experience. SkillHer continued to be a space where women could ask questions freely, learn without judgment, and celebrate progress, big or s...
