Recharge and Rise: Highlights From the Wellness & Leadership Retreat
At SkillHer, we believe that women lead best when they are well—mentally, emotionally, and physically. This belief was at the core of the Wellness & Leadership Retreat, held in collaboration with the Oyo State Office of Student Affairs, where female student leaders from across Oyo State gathered for a day of rest, learning, healing, and connection.
To capture the essence of the retreat, we are sharing this piece, guided by a heartfelt reflection from Oluborode Oluwayanmife-Choice Dorcas, Oyo State Chairperson of the National Female Student Association of Nigeria (in the middle of the picture below). Her words express not just her journey, but the shared experience of several young women who participated.
A Warm, Intentional Start
From the moment participants arrived, the atmosphere carried warmth, intention, and sisterhood. The retreat opened with lively introductions and an energizing Zumba dance session—immediately breaking tension and helping everyone reconnect with their bodies.
Health & Leadership: A Wake-Up Call
The first session, facilitated by Dr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Olusa, was a powerful reminder of how easily young leaders neglect their health. She spoke about stress, overworking, and the importance of rest. Participants shared that this session helped them see wellness as the foundation of leadership—not an afterthought.
Creativity, Collaboration & Expression
The room then shifted into a space of expression and calm under the guidance of Mrs. Galina Gardner. Participants explored visual arts as a tool for emotional release and mindfulness. Divided into four groups, they created meaningful artwork from simple materials. Many described this moment as magical—proof that creativity brings joy, connection, and inner peace.
Breathing, Grounding & Emotional Reset
In the final session, Mrs. Chioma Fakorede, wellness and mental health coach, led participants through breathing and grounding exercises. Her calm presence helped the group reflect deeply, honour their emotions, embrace intentional rest and learn effective strategies to maintain balance. Many participants said this session felt like pressing a personal “reset” button.
Moments That Made Us Feel Seen
Beyond the sessions, the group activities filled the retreat with laughter, shared experiences, and heartfelt conversations. The gratitude exercise was especially profound—helping participants acknowledge everyday joys and inner strength.
Leaving Renewed & Empowered
By the end of the retreat, participants described feeling lighter, more focused, and deeply rejuvenated. Many shared a similar shift in mindset—from “I have to carry everything alone” to “I am supported, I am enough, and I deserve rest.”
This message resonates strongly with our mission at SkillHer and one of our programs-SkillHer Wellness and reminded every young woman that wellness is not indulgence—it is strength.
In Her Words
Oluwayanmife-Choice beautifully summed up the collective experience:
“I came in as myself, but I left renewed, empowered, and ready to lead with balance and purpose.”
Her reflection represents the gratitude expressed by all participants who attended and felt the impact of the day.
Thank You, Leaders
We are deeply grateful to all the young women who participated and brought their energy, openness, and courage to the retreat.
We also thank the Oyo State Office of Student Affairs for collaborating with us to create this restorative space.
Together, we are raising a generation of female leaders who lead with strength and wellness at the centre.
