This day is more than just a public holiday; it is a symbol of the country's enduring struggle for freedom, justice, and democratic governance.  The Historical Context  The significance of June 12th dates back to 1993, a watershed year in Nigeria's political history. On this day, Nigeria held what is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in its history. Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a businessman and philanthropist, won a decisive victory.
