The SAW Journey Continues ✨

Image
Our Skills Acquisition Workshop (SAW) has been nothing short of transformative — and the journey is still unfolding beautifully. Week after week, participants are unlocking new skills, gaining confidence, and discovering how much they can achieve when they lean in and learn together. In recent sessions, we’ve explored some highly practical areas that cut across business, personal growth, and employability: Social Media Management In today’s digital world, visibility is everything. Participants learned how to navigate different platforms, create engaging content, and manage communities online. Beyond likes and shares, they now understand how social media can be a tool for building brands and driving real opportunities. Graphics Design Design is the silent ambassador of every brand. Our graphics design session gave participants hands-on exposure to tools and creative techniques that help ideas come alive visually. From simple flyers to eye-catching social posts, they’re already creat...

The Case for Skill-Based Learning

Image
Across the world, education is undergoing a shift. Traditional degrees are no longer the sole measure of readiness for the workplace or entrepreneurship. Instead, the question is becoming: what can you actually do? This shift explains why skill-based learning is gaining momentum—and why it’s critical for women and young people in Africa today. A Global Shift in Demand Research shows that by 2030, over half of the global workforce will need to reskill or upskill to keep pace with evolving roles (World Economic Forum). In Africa, the challenge is even more pressing: youth unemployment hovers around 12 million young people entering the labor market annually with limited opportunities (African Development Bank). Employers increasingly highlight “skills gaps” as a major barrier to hiring. Skill-based learning directly addresses this gap by focusing on practical capabilities—digital literacy, financial management, leadership, communication—that are immediately relevant and applicable....

With each workshop, participants are not only picking up new skills but also unlocking boldness, structure, and strategic thinking. Here’s a look at some of the sessions we’ve had so far: Research & Project Management Kicking things off, this session demystified what it takes to conduct effective research & lead projects with confidence. From managing timelines and stakeholders to using modern tools, participants learned how to take an idea and move it into execution — whether in tech, business, or community projects. Kicking Off with Intention: Highlights from the SkillHer SAW Facilitators Workshop

Image
The SkillHer Skills Acquisition Workshop (SAW) officially kicked off with a power-packed session designed for the incredible crew behind driving learning outcomes: our facilitators. Before the main participants even step into their sessions, we gathered the minds and hearts shaping the experience for a deep-dive workshop that set the tone for what’s to come. This wasn’t just a warm-up, it was a strategic launch into what promises to be an impactful learning journey for every woman joining SAW. Through two focused sessions, our facilitators explored how to teach not just effectively, but intentionally. The experience began with a virtual introductory session, where facilitators received an overview of SAW’s core objectives and reflected on what truly makes a learning session great.  Two days later, we gathered in person for the physical workshop, structured around two key themes: Theme 1: Training Needs Analysis and Learning Objectives We started by revisiting the fundamentals: What...

What Helps Women Thrive(in Tech & beyond)? Not Just Skills—Support. And why we’re doubling down on both at SkillHer.

Image
A woman in a recent Guardian article described her experience in a women-in-tech network as “a game-changer.” As important as they are, it wasn’t a coding bootcamp or some expensive course that made the difference. It was the community . It was the encouragement . It was the small wins that added up over time . And honestly? That hit home for us—because we’ve seen the same thing happen right here at SkillHer. We’ve Always Known the Truth For women—especially in Africa—breaking into tech or building something for yourself isn’t just about learning a new skill. It’s about: Feeling like you belong in new rooms Knowing you’re not alone when imposter syndrome kicks in Having people who will cheer you on, even when life gets busy or messy We’ve seen women start SkillHer programs unsure of themselves… and leave with job offers, business plans, and a real sense of "I can do this." Credentials Are Great. But Confidence? That’s Gold. We love to see our members c...

Staying Ahead: Why Continuous Upskilling is Your Greatest Competitive Advantage

Image
In today’s fast-moving world, talent alone is no longer enough. What sets truly successful individuals apart is not just what they know —but how willing they are to keep learning . Whether you’re trying to break into a new field, grow in your current role, or build something of your own, continuous upskilling is the edge you need. At SkillHer , we’ve seen firsthand how investing in skills consistently opens doors, boosts confidence, and ultimately transforms lives. That’s why we designed the SkillHer Skills Acquisition Workshop (SAW) — a practical, hands-on program focused on equipping women with relevant, in-demand skills for today’s evolving world of work. Why Upskilling Matters More Than Ever The workplace is not what it used to be. Technology is reshaping industries. New tools emerge every quarter. The Upside of Working and Earning Remotely: Freedom, Flexibility & Global Paychecks

Image
The world of work is changing—and for women across Africa and beyond, this shift is opening new doors. Remote work isn’t just a trend; it’s a transformation. It’s changing how we show up, how we earn, and how we build lives that reflect our full potential. At SkillHer, we believe in helping women tap into that power—and it starts with understanding just how much upside there is to working and earning remotely. Here’s what makes remote work a game-changer: 1. Access to Global Opportunities You’re no longer limited by geography. With the right skills and mindset, a woman in Ibadan can work for a startup in Berlin or a nonprofit in Toronto. Remote work removes borders and connects you to clients, companies, and collaborators around the world. 2. Flexibility That Fits Your Life Whether you're a student, a mum, a caregiver, or simply someone building multiple passions, remote work gives you back control of your time. You can structure your day to work when you’re most productive, not j...

Why SkillHer Created a Job Shadowing Program—and Why We’re Expanding It into a Traineeship

Image
" Exposure is a catalyst for empowerment."  This is one of the core beliefs we're driven by at SkillHer. We understand that it’s not enough to simply teach women and girls new skills—we must also create real-world opportunities for them to apply those skills, gain confidence, and see what’s possible. That’s why we introduced the SkillHer Job Shadowing Program . The "Why" Behind Job Shadowing Many of the women we serve are talented, motivated, and ready to learn—but unsure about how to translate what they know into viable career paths. They often haven’t had access to industry mentors, structured career guidance, or opportunities and workplaces that feel welcoming to them. The job shadowing program was designed to bridge that gap. By spending time with professionals across fields like tech, media, development and entrepreneurship, participants get to: Observe workflows and team dynamics Understand the soft and hard skills needed in real roles Ask qu...

Reflections from the SkillHer Job Shadowing Program

Image
From March to May 2025, SkillHer brought learning to life through its Job Shadowing Program, a practical and purpose-driven initiative that connected young women with real-world experiences in community and project management. Designed to bridge the gap between ambition and action, the program gave participants an intimate look at what it takes to build and sustain digital communities and run impactful projects. The call We’re proud to share reflections from three standout participants—Derinsola Agboluwaje, Joy Ipemosi Momoh, and Monilola Olaseinde—who immersed themselves in roles that demanded initiative, creativity, and heart.  Derin: Learning the Pulse of Online Communities Assigned as a WhatsApp Community Manager, Derin stepped into a space where digital silence sometimes speaks volumes. She worked on composing group messages, encouraging engagement, and organizing participant data. Derin also learnt the use of google docs and sharpened both her communication and technical skil...

Goal setting workshop recap

Image
We recently held a goal setting workshop for members of our community. Below are some excerpts you should find beneficial for quick reference:    As we all know, dreams without plans remain just that—dreams. This session will help you turn your vision into *clear, achievable steps*. Let’s get started! *  Why Goal-Setting Matters* Before we begin, take a moment to reflect:   *Think of one big dream you have for this year.*   *What’s stopping you from achieving it?*  Drop your thoughts in your notepad! Now, let’s talk about *why setting goals is important*:   Goals give you *clarity*—they turn vague dreams into something concrete.   They *keep you focused*—helping you prioritize what really matters.   Goals **increase motivation**—you’re more likely to take action when you have a clear plan.   They allow you to **track progress**—so you can celebrate small wins along the way.  Would you say you currently ...
