Why SkillHer Created a Job Shadowing Program—and Why We’re Expanding It into a Traineeship
"Exposure is a catalyst for empowerment." This is one of the core beliefs we're driven by at SkillHer. We understand that it’s not enough to simply teach women and girls new skills—we must also create real-world opportunities for them to apply those skills, gain confidence, and see what’s possible.
That’s why we introduced the SkillHer Job Shadowing Program.
The "Why" Behind Job Shadowing
Many of the women we serve are talented, motivated, and ready to learn—but unsure about how to translate what they know into viable career paths. They often haven’t had access to industry mentors, structured career guidance, or opportunities and workplaces that feel welcoming to them.
The job shadowing program was designed to bridge that gap.
By spending time with professionals across fields like tech, media, development and entrepreneurship, participants get to:
-
Observe workflows and team dynamics
-
Understand the soft and hard skills needed in real roles
-
Ask questions and build networks
-
Visualize themselves in positions they may have once thought were out of reach
For many, this has been a turning point—not just in career direction, but in confidence.
Why We’re Expanding Into a Traineeship
As powerful as job shadowing is, we realized that exposure is only the first step; what follows must be a fuller immersion and more in-depth experience. So, we're growing this already impactful program into an expanded and more structured SkillHer Traineeship. We’re not ending the job shadowing program, we’re simply building on it to make it even more powerful.
This expansion will:
-
Provide hands-on work experience on real projects
-
Pair trainees with mentors for guided support
-
Offer stipends to ease the financial burden of learning
-
Help participants build portfolios and gain references
-
Strengthen pathways to jobs, or entrepreneurial ventures
The goal is to help SkillHer women transition from learners to fully equipped contributors—active players in the economy, confident in their capabilities, and ready to lead.
What’s Next
The traineeship program will be launching with select partners who understand the importance of inclusive growth and talent development. We're building pathways not just into work—but into impactful, sustainable, and fulfilling careers.
To partners, employers, and mentors: we invite you to help shape this future with us.
SkillHer is committed to creating spaces where women are not only trained—but trusted.
